For generations, the Gardela family has lived in Douro. It’s a small, unassuming rural town with a mystical lore that attracts and intrigues visitors, and a largely undocumented, highly classified past with the Canadian armed forces. While Jeremy Gardela is grieving, following his sister’s tragic death, a stranger with a military background and a preoccupation with the town’s history, both factual and fabled, arrives and starts making enquiries. Jeremy’s Aunt Kasia is disquieted by the man, who has information about her ancestors, knowledge that no one should have. She recruits her nephew and sends him on a quest to use old family journals to unravel the mystery, solve the puzzle, and find a precious hidden cache. Within This Darkness by Chris Tomasini follows Jeremy, the challenges he faces, his discovery of secrets going back more than a century, and the legacy he will forever carry with him.

Within This Darkness is a wonderful story that is very hard to put down. It’s written from different perspectives, in different centuries, and with aspects of the supernatural thrown in. Chris Tomasini has united these potentially complicated components effortlessly. The plot is strong and is revealed to the reader slowly but deliberately, with every little detail, even mere hints of foreshadowing, clearly planned and purposeful. The pace is equally deliberate, with chapters of varying lengths. Each chapter focuses on the happenings of one perspective at a time, maintaining clarity and creating intrigue. A diverse range of characters all play a role in Jeremy’s journey, no matter how small. While not all are likable, each is written in such a way that you can easily picture them, their mannerisms, and even the way they speak. Tomasini touches on grief and loss, war, and crises of identity, creating a depth to the storyline and evoking empathy in the reader. Within This Darkness is easy to read, highly evocative, and extremely engaging. I love the little details, seemingly innocuous conversations or interactions that then play a much bigger role in the story. I didn’t know where the narrative would go next, and right up to the end, there were moments of suspense and surprise! This book has great appeal for fans of fantasy, mystery, and suspense. Overall, a fantastic read. I heartily recommend it.

Within This Darkness is the first book of Chris Tomasini's Douro-Zamość Trilogy. Life hasn't been the same for teenager Jeremy Gardela ever since his sister passed away in a tragic accident. Living in the small town of Douro, Ontario, Jeremy, like everyone else, grew up listening to stories about the myth of buried treasure in the dark woods full of territorial wolves. When his Aunt Kasia reveals that magical blood flows in their veins, Jeremy finds himself embroiled in past family secrets and embarks on a quest to find the fourth missing moon stone in the woods. Soon, he finds his long-lost Great-aunt Agata, who hasn't aged a day. Meanwhile, a military man is now on their trail with plans of his own. Can Jeremy find the treasure? What's his true purpose as a "walker"?

Within This Darkness is a captivating tale of magic, mystery, adventure, and friendship. From the first lines, your eyes are glued to the pages as you embark on a fantastical mystery adventure with rich and layered characters who go through their own personal journeys. Chris Tomasini takes his time to build the world and its characters, providing in-depth backstories that make the setting so much more immersive. The lore about the five sisters and the walkers had me hooked. The author also incorporates actual historical events surrounding World War II as the narrative switches back and forth between the past and the present, adding to the richness of the world. It feels lived-in. I loved the characters, the setting, the lore, and the overall story, and I'm looking forward to reading the sequel. Highly recommended!

In Within This Darkness, Chris Tomasini merges the storylines of two supernaturally gifted teens, Jeremy Gardela, who lives in 2017, and his distant cousin, Agata Obara, who was born in the early 20th century. Roger Shambling, a mysterious Canadian military officer, pays an untimely visit to Jeremy's elderly aunt, Kasia, and begins quizzing her on their family history. Kasia becomes wary of his agenda and immediately sends Jeremy on a riveting quest through the forests surrounding their hometown in Douro, Ontario. Equipped with maps given to him by his aunt, Jeremy undertakes this daring adventure and eventually discovers a cavern that protects Agata's comatose body. After awakening Agata, the teens return to Kasia's home for further guidance. In the interim, they are heavily pursued by Shambling, who wants to gain and control their magical powers for himself.

Within This Darkness is a captivating YA fantasy that intricately explores themes like bereavement and the search for belonging in a world overshadowed by danger and unforeseen mysteries. In this enthralling story, both Jeremy and Agata have lost people they deeply care about. Nonetheless, their heartfelt adventure draws them closer together and inspires them to each become the support that the other person needs. Chris Tomasini skillfully uses this compelling dynamic to add a wealth of emotional depth and intrigue to the narrative. I also praise his creativity in merging magical elements with World War I and Polish historical representations. This nuanced combination gives the story a realistic yet whimsical touch. I recommend this novel to people who enjoy YA fiction that touches on tropes like family bonds, loss, bravery, and forming new connections.
