A dead media professional, a missing suit, and a sex scandal that will test Frank Leland’s resolve. Working Stiff by Bill Krieger is a gripping, fast-paced murder mystery set in 1970s New York. Following his divorce and his resignation from the police force, Frank Leland is working as a private investigator, photographing cheating partners and earning just enough to cover the bills for his run-down bedsit. But when a former client offers him the chance to earn big money for hiding a body, he’s curious enough to take a look. Frank finds himself toe to toe with an advertising mogul who’s harboring a nasty secret. So, Frank takes his money but walks away until a hysterical pregnant woman begs for his help. Her husband was just arrested for the murder of the body Frank refused to hide. And as Frank digs deeper, the killer acts, and two more bodies float to the surface of a horrible conspiracy involving the city’s brightest and best.
Frank Leland can’t mask the addiction that is ruining his life. His fatal flaw is a food addiction, and the way he eats to suppress his overwhelming emotions. I found him infinitely relatable, as was his dry wit and self-deprecating humor. My favourite quote is, ‘I was spending all my one-day-at-a-times at the all-you-can-eat buffet of Trouble and Heartaches, and I was always hitting the line for seconds.’ I loved the raw honesty in Bill Krieger’s portrayal of Frank, offering an openness that makes you feel like a voyeur. He’s a man of extreme conscience and an excellent investigator. The mystery is solid and filled with twists and turns sharp enough to give you whiplash. Working Stiff is incredibly well written, and the descriptions are powerful. The author has a way with words that amplifies the atmospheric pull. I loved this exciting novel and will look for more in this series.
