You Paid for This: My Twenty-Five Years Investigating Insurance Crimes by Richard Wickliffe is remarkably entertaining, thought-provoking, and informative. It revolves around the work of a member of the Special Investigation Unit for an American insurance company. The unit is not a law enforcement agency as such, but their work is similar in that they have to investigate actual crimes. They investigate the circumstances to establish whether they should pay the insurance to the insured client by checking the veracity of their claims. Many insurance policyholders have resorted to committing fraud to obtain funds. This book outlines some of the many outlandish schemes that have been dreamed up by dishonest citizens. It is truly a marvelous read and will keep you hooked.
You Paid for This by Richard Wickliffe will make you think twice before committing fraud. The book is a worthwhile read for its sheer entertainment value alone. The stories were so bizarre that I had to remind myself they were all non-fictional accounts of real-life attempts at committing fraud. Wickliffe includes personal anecdotes concerning his experiences. I could only imagine what it felt like to have been called in by the FBI. Wickliffe was anxious about the visit, but they treated him with respect and admiration. Some of the most hilarious incidents that Wickliffe encountered involved people who tried to claim for personal injuries they alleged to have suffered. He recounted the example of an occasion when eight adult men squeezed into a Toyota Corolla under extremely abnormal circumstances.
