Zoey Lyndon’s Crush Chronicles by Micheal Anderson is a heartwarming story that follows Zoey, a fifth grader with amazing friends. As Valentine’s Day approaches, Zoey and her best friend, Tommi, are both eager to be noticed. However, a hurtful comment from a classmate leaves Zoey feeling insecure. With encouragement and a makeover from her family, she returns to school with newfound confidence. To her surprise, Zoey attracts the attention of a secret admirer and immediately shares her feelings about it with Tommi. However, she starts to notice that Tommi has been acting strangely and hiding things about her own love life. When Zoey discovers Tommi’s secret, it leads to a fallout between the best friends. Will they be able to mend their friendship after the revelation, or will the challenges of young love pull them apart for good?

Zoey Lyndon’s Crush Chronicles is a compelling tale that explores themes of young love, family, school drama, and friendship. The plot is relatable, delving into the issues of insecurities, uncertainty, and betrayal that can challenge even the strongest friendships. I enjoyed watching Zoey gradually open up to her secret admirer; her personal growth is beautiful. I also appreciated her family's support, as the banter between her parents and her sister's encouraging remarks provided Zoey with a solid foundation for developing strong moral values. They take pride in their Black heritage, instilling in her a sense of identity and self-worth. Adolescence brings its own set of challenges, from bullying to the struggle for identity and self-acceptance. Micheal Anderson addresses these issues in a relatable and engaging manner, making this book valuable for young readers who face similar experiences. It also includes educational elements, incorporating historical facts about American politics. The story concludes with an open ending, leaving readers eager to discover what happens next in Zoey’s life. Overall, this is a wonderful read and a must-have for young readers navigating the complexities of friendship and first crushes.
