Unlike any other travel book in the world, Gunnar Garfors has written a collection of anecdotes and observations about his travels to every country around the globe. In 198: How I Ran Out of Countries - By Visiting Random People on Incredible Travels to Every Country in the Whole Wide World, the author offers a brief glimpse at the roads less travelled (some, hardly at all!) with humor and a sincere dedication to avoiding typical tourist venues in order to see how the average person lives. With experiences on all seven continents, Garfors provides a look at the broad spectrum of living conditions, cultural norms, dining, geography and ecology that make up our world – some modern and some still relatively primitive – but mostly all off the beaten path.
Vivid descriptions of scenery, odd and unusual points of interest, and interpersonal interactions put you right into the story with Garfors and his travelling companions. Their harrowing experiences with government officials and pan handlers alike make you glad you stayed at home! He keeps social commentary to a minimum, but includes valid points about political leaders, the rich and poor and the state of the environment, experiencing it all firsthand, up close and extremely personal. It provides a rare glimpse of many places most people will never see and really addresses the common bond of all people - friendliness and sharing.
Gunnar Garfors' 198: How I Ran Out of Countries - By Visiting Random People on Incredible Travels to Every Country in the Whole Wide World is a terrific read for anyone who wishes they could travel and an invaluable reference for those who want to follow Gunnar Garfors’ motto ‘Easy is boring.’ This book is a hit with the author's sense of humor and choice of interesting anecdotes. It is quite entertaining and certainly worth reading for the vicarious enjoyment of amazing adventures.
