In 2Hour Treasure Hunt: Colonial New York for Young Explorers by Chase Cohen, readers are invited to be explorers and learn about the colonial period of New York City. Each stop is packed with history and fun facts about the city and its landmarks, including the Lenape Tribe, who gave it the name Manahatta or “land of many hills,” the many protests at City Hall Park, and George Washington’s inauguration at the Federal Hall National Monument. Children also learn how to follow directions and navigate each street that takes them inside the city’s past. Readers are encouraged to tap into their adventurous side, discover history through curiosity, and awaken their imaginations with interesting stories about New York City.

I enjoyed reading 2Hour Treasure Hunt. It is filled with educational information perfect for young explorers and adventurers. My favorite historical fact was learning about how Fraunces Tavern was the meeting place during the American Revolution and was also linked to the Culper Spy Ring. The pacing is structured like a walking adventure. The information provided at each stop, including the bonus landmarks, is written in short, digestible sections. I appreciated the explorer challenges, the drawing prompts, and the interactive instructions. I was able to download the QR Code and zoom into each stop as I read along and imagined each historic event. The writing is very simple and not too overwhelming for young readers. The black and white illustrations provide great visual support to further comprehension. Readers who enjoy history and activity-based books like National Geographic Kids Ultimate U.S. Road Trip Atlas would most appreciate 2Hour Treasure Hunt.

Chase Cohen's 2Hour Treasure Hunt: Colonial New York for Young Explorers invites children on an interactive journey through Lower Manhattan, blending history with exploration. The guide begins by welcoming readers into a “league” of explorers and giving them a mission to find key locations connected to early American history. From the start, the book encourages curiosity, asking participants to observe their surroundings, complete challenges, and imagine what life was like during colonial times. As young readers go through the book, they encounter landmarks such as City Hall Park, Trinity Church, and St. Paul’s Chapel, each paired with brief, engaging historical explanations and activities that reinforce learning. The narrative introduces important ideas, such as “no taxation without representation” and New York’s role during the American Revolution, in a clear and friendly way.

The lively and encouraging writing style keeps young readers engaged without overwhelming them. The pacing moves steadily, balancing short bursts of historical information with interactive elements such as drawing challenges and observation tasks. This structure allows children to absorb key details while staying active and involved. The language is clear and inviting, making complex ideas about early American history easy to understand. Illustrations and maps support the text and give visual anchors that help readers connect locations with their historical significance. Chase Cohen's 2Hour Treasure Hunt works especially well for families, educators, or groups looking to combine learning with an outdoor activity, offering a shared experience that encourages discussion and discovery. Readers who enjoy hands-on exploration, history presented in small pieces, and creative participation will find this book especially rewarding. It's visually pleasing as well.
