Maldonado begins with the decision to sue, showing how proof affects whether a claim belongs in court and whether recovery is realistic. He then moves into building a case theory before explaining how a complaint turns that theory into a formal filing. Once the defendant responds, the book shows what an answer means and how affirmative defenses can alter the road ahead. Discovery brings readers into formal evidence gathering, where each method serves a different purpose. Depositions move the case into sworn testimony. From there, Maldonado explains why settlement happens so often before introducing negotiation psychology. The final material explains summary judgment and trial preparation. Maldonado then takes readers toward a verdict through judgment collection before closing with appeals.
J. Maldonado’s Real Litigation: A Pro Se Litigant's Guide To Civil Warfare is a fantastic legal handbook, and a genuinely useful tool for anyone preparing to represent themselves in civil court. The writing is direct and easy to use, and I love how Maldonado turns firsthand experience into advice readers can apply. His dealership case is a perfect example, with recorded phone calls and saved emails giving him evidence of what had been promised over the replacement tires on his Porsche Macan. I also liked Maldonado’s honesty about learning to question witnesses under oath. During one of his first depositions, a witness response prompted him to turn his scripted questions into an adaptable outline, and he explains exactly how that improved his preparation. Well written and packed with practical legal knowledge, readers considering pro se litigation will want this in their back pocket.
