The Garden of Two is a novel written by Vicki-Ann Bush. Fresh out of high school, Charlie Murphy is surrounded by flying bullets in the battlefield. Then he is hit. As he lay dying, his thoughts of Lillie, his one true love, surround him, as does a vision of a garden he will never forget. Charlie had gone to school with Lillie Whitman since his first schooling year, but had never gained the courage to speak to her until the day Charlie attends a job interview with Lillie’s father, James. It is also the day Charlie’s mother suffers a massive stroke. On hearing news of Charlie’s mother, James introduces Charlie to his late wife’s beautiful garden, inviting Charlie to bring his sick mother to the garden to help her heal. Charlie spends considerable time from that day onwards getting to know the stunning yet elusive Lillie, who had never met anybody like Charlie before. Lillie falls for Charlie and soon realizes her future is by his side as his wife and mother of his children. Their dream is mutual and they profess their love for each other, with Lillie making Charlie promise never to leave her. Then the USA commits troops to the war as World War I begins...
This is one of those epic love stories that transcends time itself. Vicki-Ann Bush has created a love to conquer all others. Not since my favorite Hogwarts' teacher was killed have I ever literally cried so hard. The intricate details, not only of Lillie’s life at home, but also of Charlie’s life on the front line are ever so meticulous. Reading The Garden of Two was akin to watching a film of the greatest and most tragic love story ever told. The characters were not just likeable but were loveable, with each tragedy personally felt as if it were my own while I read. The book moved along at a steady pace throughout, leaving no stone unturned or question unanswered. I thoroughly recommend this book to all readers over the age of 15 who enjoy their romance served up with humor, action, drama, tragedy and a true love which cannot be extinguished. The Garden of Two trumps every book I have ever read.
