Raised in a strict cult-like religion, life was stifling, and because of her abusive father, Becca quickly learned how to make herself invisible, silently suffering while bearing witness to her mother's ongoing torment. Having built resentment for everything and everyone around her, Becca plans to escape the oppressive lifestyle. However, when she discovers the truth about her birth, Becca's scorn for everyone intensifies, and she immediately starts plotting her revenge against the family that could so easily discard their daughter. They need to feel the pain and heartache she suffered growing up.

Mary Perrine's narrative style immediately drew me in; she is a great storyteller, possessing a wonderful and creative imagination. The well-thought-out plot and lively characters are testimony to that. I was deeply invested in the story; each character had their unique voice and personality and I liked that the story wasn't told from just one character's perspective. I was especially drawn to Becca; despite her actions, it was clear that she was a victim too, and that circumstances were the reason for her poor decision-making. Despite having been manipulated throughout her childhood, Becca turned out to be quite resourceful, although she sometimes exhibited dependency issues. The plot was unpredictable, action-packed, and filled with suspense and drama. I recommend The Road of Lies to fans of psychological thrillers and suspense.
