Voices in My Head by Susan Lynn Solomon is a collection of short stories that travels through space and time. These tales tell powerful stories of individuals that face extreme circumstances: a soldier returning from World War I with post traumatic stress syndrome, a young woman accused of witchcraft after being abused by her father, a woman who molds her own revenge on an abusive home through magic, a daughter grappling with her faith and her lifestyle in the wake of her mother's death, a man called back home from his high power NYC career to find the old town not as dead as he imagined it would be, and other tales of those maligned by society setting things straight through magical and otherworldly means. It offers a variety of characters, settings, and situations that allow your mind to wander through different times and places where people deal with their pain in surprisingly similar manners.
Voices in My Head is a brilliant collection of stories. Susan Lynn Solomon has a way of connecting with readers by showing us people, not unlike ourselves, dealing with extraordinary circumstances (sometimes for better, oftentimes for worse). It's urban fantasy without the cliched elements that are so popular now, and you can tell that she has carefully researched the elements of each story to lend a unique flair to each situation. If you like the paranormal but are ready for something more than vampires and werewolves, then this is the book for you. It's also a great read for those who don't have a lot of time because each story is brief enough to read in one sitting, but powerful enough to stick in your mind well beyond closing the book. Definitely an excellent collection. I enjoyed each and every story in this book.
