After her boyfriend dumps her on her birthday, Clara is having the inevitable break up blues like a normal person would. However, a mysterious woman, who introduced herself as Lucilla, is having none of it. She criticizes Clara's old car and gives her a new one – a Ferrari. In return, Clara has to help Lucilla to stop people from committing suicide. To be specific, four people will try to commit suicide in Sardinia, where Clara lives. Lucilla also promises that Clara will get her boyfriend back. A Deal with a Stranger is an exceptional romance story by Martina Munzittu.
Instead of feeling sympathy, I found the break up scene between Clara and Paolo hilarious. Paolo may be being horrible, dumping his girlfriend on her birthday, but at least he’s being honest and admits that he’s no longer in love with Clara. There’s no sense of continuing a relationship that is one-sided in the end. Lucilla is the type of mysterious person who can be charming and scary at the same time. Throughout the story, I couldn't wait to find out who this woman really was. I love when Clara argues with her during their special missions. The ending is perfect; I’m still not sure who Lucilla really is even though Clara has an idea of her identity.
Quirky, hilarious and surreal, A Deal with a Stranger is an enjoyable read with its tight plot and readable prose. I’m more than happy to recommend this well-crafted story from Martina Munzittu to my fellow readers.
