Not every Christmas story is told by a child. In A December to Remember, Robert Bernardo tells a holiday story through the eyes of Stanley, a young dog. He was once abandoned and struggling to survive. But then Adam and his family came along to rescue him. On Christmas Eve, Stanley and Adam stay up late hoping to catch a glimpse of Santa. As the hours pass and a powerful snowstorm continues outside, Adam begins to worry. Stanley does too, especially because he hates seeing his best friend disappointed. While waiting for morning, Stanley thinks about how much his life has changed and how grateful he is to be around people who love him. Does Santa show up? And is Adam awake to see him?
A December to Remember by Robert Bernardo is a sweet Christmas story told from a dog’s perspective. At times, Stanley’s thoughts were funny to read. I think kids will find it silly how much the dog wants to eat the cookies meant for Santa. The message was also very meaningful. I appreciated that the dog recognized how fortunate he was to be with Adam. As a teacher, I think it would make a nice holiday story to read with family. The illustrations are warm, colorful, and inviting. My favorite ones were of Stanley and Adam waiting together on Christmas Eve. Their excitement was contagious. Children who are looking for stories about dogs, friendship, and holiday traditions will enjoy this book. Families who read holiday stories with positive messages will want to pick this one up. This story reminds us that the greatest gifts aren't found under the tree, but in our hearts.
