A Doorman's Memoir: Tales of Friendships by Brent Lymer was a very entertaining book. It is filled with eighteen stories of Lymer’s adventures while working as a doorman for several nightclubs. The stories are hilarious and let the reader see how life is when working the velvet rope.
Lymer has shown me what it is like to be a doorman in A Doorman’s Memoir. It is slightly similar to retail as in they do not get the respect they deserve, but they have more freedom to tell the customers off. Which, by the way, Lymer is excellent at doing! Lymer’s story “They call me Ivan” was my favorite. I was rooting for him the whole time. However his story “Speak with the manager” actually had me laughing. I wish I could have been there to see it in person. The stories in the book are not just about Lymer’s experiences, but also about his friendships with the guys he worked with.
Overall, I liked most of Lymer’s stories in the book, but I felt that these were interrupted too much with other details not pertaining to the actual story. Eventually the stories always got back on track, however, and were worth reading. If you do not mind the occasional swear word, then I recommend reading this book. Lymer has also written another book of memoirs from his doorman days titled The Velvet Rope: Based on Real Events. I have yet to read it, but after reading A Doorman's Memoir, I definitely want to.
