A Drying World: Book I, Eastlanders' Fall by Alexander Brandon introduces readers to the dying realm of Ananthia, where the transformation of fertile land into desert creates an apocalyptic backdrop for an epic tale. The story follows wizard Milendil and air ranger Solostamir, whose lives are touched by the shadow of warlock Darvis Talsdrum in timelines three centuries apart. Brandon weaves together elements of forbidden magic, political intrigue, and personal loyalty while maintaining a sense of urgency throughout the narrative. This opening volume establishes a rich world and complex characters while building toward larger conflicts, setting the stage for what promises to be an expansive and engaging saga about survival, sacrifice, and the cost of redemption.
Author Alexander Brandon has created a brilliant opening to this interesting epic series with a world that feels immersive and multisensory. His portrayal of Ananthia's slow death serves as both setting and metaphor throughout the story, with moody and atmospheric language that sets up the apocalyptic feel and high-stakes survival drama and keeps us invested in every disastrous twist. The relationships between the co-protagonists and their main supporting characters develop naturally with narrative detail and strong dialogue choices, creating emotional cores that ground the story and allow us to get to know both characters as they develop as hero and anti-hero. The action sequences are clear and exciting, while the quieter moments allow for more intricate character development and larger-than-life world-building that enriches the story. The pacing is also well-timed, keeping readers engaged while building toward surprising revelations that challenge everything about the characters and their world. The theme of environmental destruction also shows a sophisticated understanding of how to address contemporary issues through the fantasy genre whilst keeping everything entertaining and relevant. Overall, I heartily recommend A Drying World to anyone seeking a fresh take on epic fantasy.
