Detective Winston Radhauser faces the worst nightmare that can befall any parent in Susan Clayton-Goldner's A Harbor of Hope. In the dead of the night, someone wounds their stallion, Ameer, in the barn. Radhauser and Gracie go to bed tired that night after having the vet attend to the horse. But when they wake up, they make a startling discovery: their fourteen-month-old twins, Justin James (JJ) and Hope Jennifer, are not in their cribs. Someone has taken them from their Ashland, Oregon, ranch, but who did such a terrible deed, and why? As Radhauser investigates, he establishes a link to a mentally ill woman who has suffered the loss of twins in a car accident. Is she the link to finding who kidnapped the twins?

As a parent, A Harbor of Hope left my nerves jangling, and while it is the fifteenth book in Susan Clayton-Goldner's series, it reads like a standalone novel. You don’t need to have read the other books to enjoy this brilliantly plotted and suspenseful thriller. I enjoyed every bit of this book: the writing is crisp, the premise is explosive, and it grips from the very start. The suspense makes the story hard to put down, and the characters are exceptionally developed. I could feel the trepidation and anxiety in Radhauser and Gracie as they discover their twins are missing, and the anxiety only grows through each page. Lillian Donovan is one of the characters I invested much time in, and she is portrayed in a way that creates pathos in the story. This novel is a clever exploration of mental illness.
