A House Full of Strangers by Diana Stevan is a collection of two novellas and eleven short stories set in Winnipeg, Manitoba, during the 1940s and 1950s. The book focuses on landladies, their families, and the tenants who pass through their homes, offering a view of life inside rooming houses during a period of change. Many characters have left behind the hardships of farming after the Great Depression and are trying to establish more stable lives in the city. To make ends meet, they take on blue-collar jobs while also renting out rooms, often sharing close quarters with a rotating cast of boarders whose lives intersect unexpectedly. Some stories depict hardship and loss, while others offer lighter moments, humor, or hope as the characters navigate relationships, financial struggles, and changing circumstances. Stevan presents a wide range of experiences that highlight both the struggles and small victories of people working toward better opportunities.

Diana Stevan’s writing is direct and grounded, with a clear focus on characters and situations. The pacing varies across the collection, allowing each story to unfold at its own rhythm, whether through quiet reflection or more event-driven moments. Dialogue plays an important role in revealing personalities and relationships, especially within the shared spaces of the rooming houses, where interactions are frequent and often layered with tension or warmth. Descriptive details help establish the settings without slowing the narrative, giving readers a strong sense of time and place. The variety of tones across the stories keeps the collection engaging, moving between serious, uplifting, and occasionally playful moments. Readers who enjoy historical fiction and character-centered storytelling will find A House Full of Strangers appealing, particularly those interested in stories about community, perseverance, and life shaped by changing circumstances.
