A Manor to Rue In by G. H. Glover is a horror novella that fulfills every horror story’s objective of scaring the pants off its readers. When First World War veteran Thomas Harrow was still reeling from ruin in the October 1929 financial crash, he was desperate for an income and a way to support his beloved wife. He accepted the commission to stay at the isolated Blackwood Manor to settle the accounts and balance the ledgers after the death of the owner. Little did he realize the tribulations awaiting him in the old house. Still haunted by the horrors he had faced in the trenches, Thomas is also assailed by supernatural forces inside Blackwood Manor, beyond his understanding. Knowing the importance to him and his wife of completing this assignment, Thomas is determined to uncover the mystery of this seemingly haunted manor.
A Manor to Rue In achieves what all horror books promise, but very few can deliver. It is a genuinely scary read and one I felt almost afraid to read, alone, at night. Author G. H. Glover has a wonderfully descriptive and deceptive style that lures readers in before springing the horrific surprises upon them. Writing horror without the assistance of visuals is an extremely difficult job, and this author has it down exceptionally well. What I really appreciated was how the author seamlessly weaves Thomas’ war experiences and trauma from those days into the narrative as he tries to understand what is happening in Blackwood Manor. The author’s portrayal of the crusty caretaker Mr. Poole was superb, and I could easily picture him in my mind, which is a testament to the author’s skill. I would love to see this story in a much longer book that would allow for even more character development and, of course, extra spooky narrative. This is an exceptionally enjoyable story that I highly recommend.
