A Matter of Honor: A Sniper, A Vice-President, and A Fishing Guide by Frank Linik is a fast-paced, taut, action thriller with political overtones. Vice-President Mark Connor is a lover of fishing, something his busy, high-powered position rarely affords him the luxury of indulging in these days. As VP Connor is attempting to shepherd an important bill through Congress, he needs to take a break from Washington; he needs some fishing relaxation. A remote luxury fishing lodge in the Pacific Northwest, with a bountiful river, is chosen as the venue for the Vice President to unwind. The top fishing guide at the lodge, Bill Brandt, is a former Vietnam veteran who, along with his wife, Kelly, and a cook, will accompany the VP and his Secret Service entourage into the wilderness. What nobody is aware of is that an anti-government militia group has hired a professional assassin to take out the Vice President during his fishing trip.
A Matter of Honor is an exciting and gripping conspiracy story that hooks readers early on and takes them on a roller coaster of both high adventure and quietly idyllic moments spent fishing. For someone like me, who is not a fisherman, the details and intricacies of fly fishing were a revelation and added to the story’s enjoyment. The action, when it happens, is intense and will keep readers hanging on to every word. Frank Linik introduces a political dimension, with the two main characters, Bill and Mark, having very different views of the role of government in individual Americans’ daily lives, certainly a topical discussion these days. I also enjoyed both the female characters: Bill’s wife, Kelly, and the venue’s chef, Rachel. Both were portrayed as not only competent, strong female role models, but also added vital skills to the survival of the fishing party. This story is a sequel to an earlier work, but it stands alone as a complete adventure. I was happy to note that another story involving these characters was indicated at the end of the book. I will be interested in reading it, as I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and highly recommend it.
