A Promise Given: A Henrietta and Inspector Howard Novel by Michelle Cox is the third entry in the series and an engaging story with a historical setting. This is a tale of family drama, love and murder. Follow Clive and Henrietta who get married in very complicated and challenging circumstances, a couple that dares to ignore their family differences and push on with the wedding. After the wedding, the new couple moves to the Howards’ ancestral estate for their honeymoon. But when a man is murdered in the village on the night of a house party at the Castle, Clive’s cousin, Wallace, is suspected of having committed the murder. Clive will work with Henrietta to prove the innocence of his cousin, but their interest in proving Wallace’s innocence will lead them to dreadful truths and dark secrets.

This is a beautiful story with strong themes of romance, family intrigue, and investigation. I enjoyed the portraits of rich English families within the historical period of the setting. The conflict is really strong and readers will love the intrigue and the nature of relationships during the wedding with the tension between Stanley and Elsie when faced with a flamboyant Harrison. The writing is gorgeous and reflects the cultural and historical setting. Michelle Cox’s novel is filled with deeply moving passages and emotionally charged scenes. The characters are as sophisticated as they are relatable and the plot is designed to make for the perfect page-turner. A Promise Given: A Henrietta and Inspector Howard Novel is character-driven, fast-paced, and engrossing.
