In A Shark in Calle Ocho, author Joe Curtis shows the reader the underbelly of life on the hard streets of Miami. Bob McKaren,a mild mannered accountant, is sick of his boring and drab life. On the spur of the moment he makes a decision. What does he do? He decides a change of career is needed and what could be better than being a bounty hunter. His first case goes off pretty smoothly with a little unexpected help from a retired librarian on a motor scooter.

However, his new career becomes far more dangerous when Mary Catherine Tenish hires him for a little job. Ms Tenish, an heiress to a large packaging and shipping company, is devastated by the death of her only son. She blames Antonio LaCruz, aka "Shark". Shark is the man; he grew up poor in the community of Little Havana where he stole and pickpocketed from the many tourists. As he grew up, Shark's drive enabled him to become one of Miami's largest crime bosses. He’s tough, mean, and plans to stay for a long time. But, these three lives move toward a collision in the humid streets of south Florida with drugs, blood diamonds, and murder.

With Bob McKaren, Joe Curtis has created a highly likeable but unlikely hero. Bob’s heart is in the right place even though he sometimes stumbles a little. Curtis has also created a cast of very interesting characters along the way. Although the story ending was a tad simplistic, I found the plot to be well conceived and very enjoyable. Well done.
