Absolute Revenge is a work of fiction penned by Margie Miklas in the psychological thriller, mystery, and medical drama subgenres. It is best suited to the general adult reading audience. ICU travel nurse Allison Jamison finds herself in a nightmarish situation when she is implicated as a drug user after being found unresponsive with a needle in her arm. Her fiancé, Detective Mark Derning, goes missing, and as Allison awakens in her own unit, she discovers Mark is in critical condition from opiate poisoning. Together, they uncover a connection between Mark's attempted murder and a surgical technician, Justin Tensington, who has been stealing fentanyl from the hospital. As they embark on a vacation to escape the danger, their holiday takes a sinister turn when Tensington follows them to Italy, turning their romantic getaway into a fight for survival against a relentless enemy with sinister motives.
Author Margie Miklas has masterfully crafted a suspenseful narrative that keeps readers on the edge of their seats, with twists and turns that constantly upend expectations, yet feel so credible in the realm of this murky medical underworld. The characters, particularly Allison and Mark, are well-developed and relatable, drawing readers into their harrowing journey as they navigate a web of deceit and danger. I was impressed by the dialogue, which was utilized well to characterize our heroes and their core relationship, but also delivered some really superb plot exposition without the need for huge chunks of prose that might otherwise have slowed the action down. The inventive ideas that underpin the dodgy dealings by Justin Tensington offer a really sinister and eerily believable set of twists, taking readers on an adrenaline-fueled experience from start to finish.
In terms of audiobook presentation, Vivienne Leheny's lively and dedicated narration adds new layers of intensity to the story and keeps a great pace that never leaves you hanging. Bringing the characters to life with her expressive delivery and expert pacing, the human impact and consequences of the plot seem even more high-stakes as you hear these characters being so realistically fleshed out. The editing was also perfectly crisp, clear, and level throughout. Overall, Absolute Revenge is a pulse-pounding thriller that will keep readers guessing until the very end, making it a must for fans of the psychological and medical thriller genres.
