In Adam and Ava Visit a Special House, Ava noticed that her brother Adam was sad one day. Upon asking him why, she finds out that her brother’s friend Danny is ill. Ava decides to ask their mom and dad if they can visit Adam’s friend to cheer him up. At this point, the twins' parents realize that their son’s friend is suffering from cancer. After they get confirmation from Danny’s mom, Ava and Adam’s mother breaks the news to the children about how ill Danny really is. Deciding to go to Memphis after they get out of school for the summer, the family makes the three-hour trip to Memphis to see Danny. Danny and his family are staying at the Ronald McDonald house for the duration of his treatment. The twins had lots of questions about cancer, and their parents had the difficult task of answering them. The visit lifts Danny’s spirits, and the twins are overjoyed that they were able to make the trip to be there for their friend.

I thought Adam and Ava Visit a Special House was an emotional and beautiful read. Betty Collier touches on a subject that very few children’s authors would. Childhood cancer is very real, with approximately 42 children a year being diagnosed in the United States. Many kids and their families stay at places like the Ronald McDonald house for the duration of their treatment. Collier approaches this tough subject very simply so that a child reader can understand. The illustrations by Cassandra Harris fit perfectly with the storyline and are so beautiful. Collier has done a brilliant job with this book, and I am eager to read more of her work.
