Alice Will by Ashley Chappell is the first book in the Dreams of Chaos series. Trotter finds herself taking the blame when the world works to tear itself apart and everyone seems to think she’s capable of creating the apocalypse. Trotter has her own issues toward her father as he and the other gods have left humanity to their own devices. When she receives a mission from a trusted ally, she sets out with her talking cat called Prowler on an adventure to deliver a message that will put her face to face with her father. Elsewhere, young Alice is a sweet little girl who works as a servant at an inn until one day a baron arrives and his kindness offers her friendship and a sense of purpose. She discovers surprising powers that catch the attention of a dangerous god with a thirst for vengeance.
Two separate storylines balance each other with two girls following the path toward their destiny. Their journeys sync up by the end for a dangerous showdown that pits them against the gods. The first journey follows Trotter as she deals with being a demi-god during a time that magic isn’t favored and works on her issues toward her father. Trotter and Prowler are constantly together as he’s her main source of companionship and an ally that has the role as a source of wisdom, encouragement, and support. He’s a delightful character that provides a constant trust and provides a great deal of the humor found throughout the story. Her story also supplies a fun adventure that introduces several of the gods and their unique attributes. The other journey follows Alice who is a powerful little girl who doesn’t know her own strength and possesses the ability to change things around her simply by wanting them.
Chappell weaves various dangerous threats into both storylines while working in a sense of innocence and child-like wonder through Alice’s perspective. Both girls head towards the same deadly foe that threatens everything around them. Chappell delivers a great story that delivers a whacky and strange world through the eyes of two girls trying to find where they belong and simply seeking out a place where they’ll be wanted. Alice Will is an epic adventure that brings to life a perilous journey, powerful magic, dangerous gods, and even talking teddy bears.
