All That Shimmers by Kady Ambrose is a beautifully crafted tale that explores themes of identity, resilience, and the transformative power of hope. Set in the enchanting White Mountains of New Hampshire, the story revolves around Vanessa Perkins, a nursemaid trying to navigate her role in the glitzy yet challenging world of the Twin Birch House, a summer haven for the wealthy. Although Ezra’s brief encounter with shimmering treasures and mythical nymphs introduces a magical realism element to the narrative, it serves as a framing device to set the tone of mystery and allure. The story’s real heart lies with Vanessa, whose experiences anchor the novel. Her journey reflects the struggles of a young woman balancing societal expectations, personal ambition, and the emotional weight of her past.

The prose is engaging and enchanting, and the setting is a standout feature. The vivid descriptions of moonlit forests, shimmering ponds, and the grand Twin Birch House create an atmosphere that grounds the novel for readers. While the magical elements introduced through Ezra’s story are intriguing, they take a backseat to the novel’s primary focus on human connection and personal growth. This shift in emphasis works well, allowing Vanessa’s resilience and emotional depth to take center stage. All That Shimmers is well written, with excellent world-building and pacing. Kady Ambrose masterfully weaved the elements of fantasy and romance to create an enchanting story that readers of both genres will enjoy. I highly recommend it as it’s a five-star book and more.

All That Shimmers by Kady Ambrose follows the enthralling journey of Vanessa Perkins, a nanny who dreams of finding true love one day. She is the nursemaid to the Wainwrights' young children. Vanessa, the Wainwright family, other hotel guests, and hotel staff occupy a lavish Boston hotel named the Twin Birch House. Vanessa catches the attention of two dashing young men--Avery, a sensitive botanist, and Ned, a wealthy aristocrat. Under the watchful eyes and intervention of fairies, nymphs, and other mythical creatures that exist in the nearby Enchanted Woods, the destinies of Vanessa, Avery, and Ned become intertwined. Avery offers Vanessa emotional support and the comfort of belonging to a close-knit family. Conversely, Ned offers her excitement, adventure, and financial security. Who will win her heart?

All That Shimmers is a well-written, atmospheric, and alluring fantasy that transports readers to a world of beauty and mysticism. It is a spectacular and bittersweet saga of loss, hope, and love. Kady Ambrose aptly blends her story with historical elements, romance, and a dash of intrigue. As Vanessa's journey to finding love unfolds, the harsh realities depicted by World War I and the Spanish Flu are a profound reminder that life is precious and fleeting in this enchanting world. The characters themselves seem to be acutely aware of this fact as well. Ambrose does an incredible job of alternating the narrative between the main characters and their perspectives and the mythical beings that inhabit the fairy world. Each character, especially Vanessa, Avery, and Ned, is well-portrayed. The author paints a vivid picture of the fascinating world evolving around the characters and the things that matter most to them. I highly recommend this captivating tale to all fantasy fans.
