All That Shimmers by Kady Ambrose is a beautifully crafted tale that explores themes of identity, resilience, and the transformative power of hope. Set in the enchanting White Mountains of New Hampshire, the story revolves around Vanessa Perkins, a nursemaid trying to navigate her role in the glitzy yet challenging world of the Twin Birch House, a summer haven for the wealthy. Although Ezra’s brief encounter with shimmering treasures and mythical nymphs introduces a magical realism element to the narrative, it serves as a framing device to set the tone of mystery and allure. The story’s real heart lies with Vanessa, whose experiences anchor the novel. Her journey reflects the struggles of a young woman balancing societal expectations, personal ambition, and the emotional weight of her past.
The prose is engaging and enchanting, and the setting is a standout feature. The vivid descriptions of moonlit forests, shimmering ponds, and the grand Twin Birch House create an atmosphere that grounds the novel for readers. While the magical elements introduced through Ezra’s story are intriguing, they take a backseat to the novel’s primary focus on human connection and personal growth. This shift in emphasis works well, allowing Vanessa’s resilience and emotional depth to take center stage. All That Shimmers is well written, with excellent world-building and pacing. Kady Ambrose masterfully weaved the elements of fantasy and romance to create an enchanting story that readers of both genres will enjoy. I highly recommend it as it’s a five-star book and more.
