Ambrosia Chronicles: The Discovery is a novel written by K.C. Simos, a new author from Athens, Greece making her debut in YA fiction. We’re introduced to Alex, a law student, and her struggle with school, friends, and body-imagery (and other more supernatural things) as the story plays with Greek mythology. This 304-page text takes young readers on a fantastic journey through a world of conflict and challenges that many will find familiar and relatable. For parents, students, and teachers, the female protagonists and multi-cultural characters and setting would make this a wonderful addition to any classroom. Emma’s visions (Sight), shape-shifters, and the volatile relationship between Ian, Alex, and Lucas, the sexual tension, and a “superman ride” will all seem familiar to Twilight and Percy Jackson fans. However, the author lends her unique voice and sense of humor to make this a nicely told YA paranormal modern fantasy.
The level of writing, approach to dialogue, and amount of imagery all seemed appropriate for the younger audience. The lack of detail seemed appropriate for a younger audience, but made it harder for me to get into. I also wondered about the unanswered questions that cropped up in the ending (plans for a sequel?). Putting those aside, readers will find themselves emotionally invested in the mystery of the Muse, Ambrosia, and the dynamic tension that comes from uncovering an ancient truth about Mt. Olympus and the Gods. The author’s creative spin made this story a fun, exciting, and interesting adventure that YA readers will enjoy.
