Ancient as the Stars is a work of fiction in the science fiction, action, and adventure subgenres. It is best suited to mature adult readers owing to the presence of violence and strong language throughout, as well as references to abuse and self-harm. Penned by author Maya Darjani, the story is a thrilling time-travel adventure featuring Captain Karenna Yilmaz, an immortal sailship captain, and Flight Officer Ren Yilmaz, her younger, snarky counterpart. When a dimensional rift brings Ren hurtling into the present, Karenna's perfect life is thrown into chaos, while Ren grapples with her own frustrations. Stranded in space and time respectively, both versions of Karenna must confront their past traumas and transgressions to work together and find a way back to their respective realities before they're stuck with each other indefinitely.
Author Maya Darjani crafts a delightful journey filled with humor, heart, and plenty of twists and turns. I am especially fond of found family dynamics, and the concept fits so well with the time travel and spacefaring adventure setting, creating a narrative that is as entertaining as it is heart-warming. The dynamic between Karenna and Ren and the exciting revelations of their respective identities are told with a great sense of narrative confidence and clarity. The author explores themes of identity, acceptance, and the consequences of past actions with a strong emotional arc of personal discovery. As the characters navigate their way through space and time, confronting their shared history and forging an unlikely alliance, the atmospheric descriptions of time and place all around them offer a perfect match to the mood of the action. Overall, Ancient as the Stars is a must-read for fans of sci-fi adventures and complex character relationships.
