Anyone who knows me knows that one of my very favorite genres is that of the short story. Another type of book high on my list is horror. And if I can combine the two, well, that's just a completely winning combination in my opinion. That's exactly what I found when I read At Hell's Gates. Written by a selection of authors, this anthology has something for almost any fan of horror. From the zombie apocalypse to demonic possession to alternate realities, this collection certainly has a common theme, but the authors have definitely taken their own individual paths to achieve that theme.

I loved this book. Loved. It. Each of the individual short stories was a gem in its own right, but as a grouping, I would certainly consider this to be a masterpiece in the horror genre. I enjoy short stories for the inherent ability of being able to set the book aside after one story, and then come back to it days, weeks, or even months later, pick it up and continue on with the next story with no problem. That's usually the way I read these books, but it wasn't how I read At Hell's Gates. I read this book feverishly, obsessively, and through the night. Each story was better than the last, which was hard to imagine as I continued to read, but I found it to be true. I cannot recommend At Hell's Gates any more highly than I am now, especially to readers who enjoy horror and short stories. I certainly hope that this collection of authors will collaborate again on a similar work. I would certainly be first in line to get that book.
