S. McPherson writes a phenomenal first book in At Water’s Edge. Approaching her eighteenth birthday, Dezaray Storm is already worn out with life. Alone in her despair, she dreams of a beautiful, magical place and a handsome stranger. The grass may be greener on the other side, but for Dezaray something sinister lurks within the shadows - something felt but not seen - something penetrating and intoxicating. Weird and strange things are happening; random, yet enlightening words are spoken, beckoning her to enter into the shimmering light. Through fate, accident, or possibly destiny, Dezaray escapes the world of abuse and guilt and enters into another world, a parallel dimension. This place is both real and unreal, the place where her dreams take shape. The world of Coltis is safe and dangerous, electrifying and terrifying. It is a world of opposing emotions and human counterparts. Once Dezaray enters into her fairy tale, she doesn’t want to return to her real world. She is in too deep for it to be temporary. For in this magical place, she finds him, the man of her dreams.

The goal of the author is to write for her “fellow dreamers and make believers.” S. McPherson certainly accomplishes her goal in At Water’s Edge. The intriguing beginning piques your curiosity and draws you in immediately. McPherson writes for her target audience extremely well; however, more mature readers may desire more depth in content. The writing style is exceptional. Penned beautifully, it is romantically mystical; McPherson’s words sway like gentle breezes across the page. It is eloquently picturesque, full of figurative descriptions. Written in first person, the narrative is told from Dezaray’s point of view. This technique makes the book captivating; the reader gets to experience all the thoughts, emotions, and actions of the heroine. The magic and innocence of young love, there’s nothing like it. Delving into the plot with ease and finesse, McPherson quickly reveals the rules and parameters of her fantasy world. Odd creatures, warlocks and vampires, portals and teleporting create an entertaining not-of-this-world story. In page upon page the plot unfolds, the struggle escalates, and the action rises until its climactic end, leaving the reader holding their breath, anticipating what’s going to happen next.

At Water's Edge by S. McPherson is book one in The Water Rushes YA book series. I think a line from the book summary is the best and most accurate description for this book's plot: Torn between a reality she can't stand and a fantasy she can't keep, Dezaray is struggling to see how any choice she makes will lead to a happy ending.

The story follows 17-year-old Dezaray Storm, who leads a very lonely and abused life. She longs for something new and anything that can help her actually be happy one day. So when she accidentally stumbles across a portal one night and switches places with a powerful sorceress....well, she thinks that her luck has finally changed. She embraces this new beginning and impersonates her doppelgänger in the new and exciting realm behind the portal. She finds excitement, happiness and a new love, which leads her to never want to go back to her old life.

But all things come with a price when she discovers that her new life is not all it seems to be. Danger and destruction loom, new enemies come forward and Dezaray finds that her only hope may be the girl whom she switched places with. The only problem is that they both can't be in the same realm, so Dezaray must go back to her old life in order for the sorceress to come back and save her kingdom.

I thought At Water's Edge was a fun and entertaining read. I think fans of the YA fantasy genre will find a lot to like about her. The story has a unique premise and an interesting plot.

Dezaray used to be an outgoing social butterfly, before her parents died in a plane crash. Now she keeps to herself and shoulders the burdens of more than she deserves, but she dreams of something else, something more. In another dimension, Lexovia is the last of her race, the hope of her world and protected at all costs. All she wants is to be a teenager and have some fun. At Water's Edge (The Water Rushes Book 1) is an epic story of two worlds or dimensions that at one time used to live together in harmony with a portal between. In each dimension was a twin or counterpart, and Lexovia and Dezaray are one of those sets. Now the worlds are kept apart by the evil Vildacrux, and Lexi is the only hope of defeating them. So when Lexi and Dezi accidentally trade places, things get a little crazy, to say the least. Author S. McPherson weaves teenage angst, romance, social issues, rebellion and honor into an epic fantasy that will keep you spellbound until the last page.

At Water's Edge is titled to be the first book in a series, and I truly hope that is the case! I could not put this book down. I laughed and cried, and I kept reading until the end and still wanted more. I wanted to know what happened next. Author S. McPherson pulls you into the story in such a way that you feel for the characters, you root for Dezi, you want her to break free of her past, you want Lexi to triumph. You feel a part of the story, which is what makes it all that much better of a read. Although it is marketed as young adult, because the characters are seventeen, this is a great read for any age.
