Ava Over the Rainbow by Jennie E Nicassio is a wonderful, heartwarming story about learning to live with loss. Haidyn loved her dog. Ava never left her side; she stayed close to Haidyn and protected her, giving her friendship and love like nothing else on earth. One day, Ava crossed the rainbow bridge, but Haidyn didn’t like that everything seemed wrong—too quiet, too big, and no Ava to fill the space. Together with her family, Haidyn learns that, just because Ava has gone away, she never truly left. She lives on in Ava’s heart, and their bond is as strong as it ever was.
Ava Over the Rainbow by Jennie E Nicassio is an amazing story for kids that shows carefully and respectfully how to deal with a hard goodbye and loss. The soft rhythm of the words and the stunning illustrations help children to understand that, when a beloved member of the family passes on, they never fully leave. They stay in the heart, their love growing ever stronger. It doesn’t matter what age you are; that goodbye is one of the hardest to make, and it never gets any easier. This book provides a safe, engaging way for kids to navigate and come to terms with their feelings, to realize that it’s okay to be sad because grief can help us heal. It also shows them that getting another dog or cat is not disrespectful; we never replace those we lose, but we always have room in our hearts for another. I like that it is written for children on the spectrum, too, as all too often, their feelings and needs get overlooked or brushed off. The fact that it is based on real-life events means younger readers will engage better with the characters and the story. I loved this book. An amazing way to make a tough subject easier to understand.
