Children who pick up "Back to Bailey’s Chase" by Marlis Day will follow Sparky and Grey Bailey as they navigate through a magical and adventure-filled summer. The girls inherited their Grandma Bailey’s mysterious and somewhat unexplained magical abilities and are still learning how to manipulate and harness their powers. Their magic allows them to travel to fantasy lands, solve crimes and help out neighbors in the small Indiana town where they live. The second book in the series follows the story of Sparky and Grey as they continue to bond over their fantastic abilities. Orphaned the previous year, Grey came to live in Bailey’s Chase with her aunt, uncle and cousin Sparky. The girls quickly become as close as sisters and are able to find adventure in everything they do. Although they face dangers large and small, they also have an amazing experience with mermaids, have a close encounter beyond the grave, and even end up with a frisky puppy as an addition to their family!
This book was written for readers in the intermediate grades, and I think it mostly hit the mark. Strong readers as young as second or third graders will probably enjoy the story the most, but the pace is definitely quick enough for more reluctant readers in fifth or sixth grade. Because each chapter can pretty much stand alone, the story moves along very satisfactorily. Ms. Day’s writing style is somewhat old-fashioned, which upper elementary schoolers might not appreciate, but parents could very well find themselves being gently reminded of some mysteries they had read when they were young.
