Author Biography

Debra Kristi was born and raised a Southern California girl. She still resides in the sunny state with her husband, two kids, and three schizophrenic cats. Unlike the characters she often writes, she is not immortal and her only super power is letting the dishes and laundry pile up. When not writing, Debra is hanging out creating priceless memories with her family, geeking out to science fiction and fantasy television, and tossing around movie quotes.

Becoming is the first book of the Balance Bringer Chronicles, a young adult fantasy series by Debra Kristi. The plot of Becoming focuses on Ana, a high school sophomore who’s clinging to the bottom of the social ladder, despite being noticeably nicer than most of her female peers. But there’s something strange about Ana that perhaps others can sense, for she suffers from incredibly realistic dreams in a place called Hiddenkel, and now it seems that the dreams are closing in on her reality. With different advice flying in from all around her and the materialisation of the literal guy of her dreams, Ana must figure out who to trust, and where the shadows are coming from that threaten to change her young life forever.

Debra Kristi is an author who makes gore and violence elegant with her carefully created wordplay. Becoming is a highly readable book that’s straightforward enough for its intended YA audience, but also filled with hidden complexities that will delight adult readers too. Readers will love the half-and-half approach to genuine high school drama and serious fantasy action and adventure, along with a sub-plotted romance that doesn’t overspill, but enhances the novel’s central storyline. The ending is satisfying in itself, but leaves plenty of excitement to wonder at what will come next. I’ve read work by Debra Kristi before and enjoyed it, but I have to say Becoming is the best I’ve seen so far, and I think it’s an essential addition to any young adult fantasy fan’s bookshelf.

Becoming: The Balance Bringer is volume one of Debra Kristi's young adult contemporary fantasy series, The Balance Bringer Chronicles. Ana is a senior in high school and has been training with her best friend and almost heart throb, Ryland, in swimming and martial arts. He's been by her side ever since that awful night two years prior when Jeremy was killed in an auto accident as he and Ana drove away from a formal dance. Skylar, Ana's nemesis, had tried to recreate the Carrie prom scenario, and Ana was left humiliated and covered in a thick red liquid. Skylar's always been bullying Ana and taunting her about her strangely colored eyes and birthmark. Even though she is different, Ana enjoys her advanced physical conditioning work with Ryland and hanging out with her sister, Crystia. She doesn't even mind working the farmer's market with her mom, but things are started to get strange. Ryland and her mom seem very close, and any attempts she makes to get more affectionate with him are gently rebuffed. Then, there are those dreams that seem so real.

Debra Kristi's contemporary young adult fantasy, Becoming: The Balance Bringer, is an exciting coming of age story brimming with with action and adventure. Ana is a compelling character who is strong, independent and capable. Her dream sequences complement much of what's going on in her waking life, and it's particularly fun when the two seem to converge. There's a mythology behind Ana and her family, and Kristi spins that mystery out carefully, which tends to get the reader more and more involved in figuring it all out. Kristi is a consummate story-teller, and I quickly got wrapped up in her well-plotted and marvelously written tale. Becoming: The Balance Bringer is a contemporary fantasy infused with elements of epic fantasy and it's a wonderful read. Becoming: The Balance Bringer is most highly recommended.

Becoming: The Balance Bringer (The Balance Bringer Chronicles) (Volume 1) by Debra Kristi is an intriguing story that will keep readers glued to the book. Ana finds her world becoming weird and eerie when what she thinks are dreams are not actually dreams. She finds them happening in her real life. She does not know who to turn to for help. She cannot turn to her mom or best friend or her younger sister as they all have some issues which prevent her from reaching out to them. Above all this, there are some dark forces trying to destroy Ana. Will Ana be able to overcome all this with the help of family and friends?

The story is filled with adventure, fantasy, suspense and intrigue. The twists and turns in the plot make readers anticipate, speculate and wait with bated breath to learn what is going to happen as the story progresses. Ana's character, like the story, is intriguing and mysterious, and the author does a good job portraying her that way. The subplots have been woven into the main plot with a lot of expertise and without making it forced. The fantasy element, along with the intrigue and suspense running parallel in the plot, gives the story many layers and dimensions. The open ending keeps the hopes of readers alive for more intrigue and fantasy. I enjoyed this fantasy story and can't wait to read the next part. The description of the scenes are vivid and very visual and the author's words convey a wonderful imagery.
