Author Biography

“Hollywood” Bob had a history of life on the sea. From his home in New Zealand he had made his way as a fisherman, sailor and ferryboat captain. He was a rugged, imposing man, well over six feet tall, with sparkling blue eyes and white hair that belied his years. Bob had been living in Marina del Rey, working as a shipwright on the yachts of Hollywood stars, when an offer to sail to New Zealand with Hollywood actor Hal Holbrook re-kindled his passion for the sea.

Peter was a seasoned traveler. Since leaving his home in the south of England at age seventeen to emigrate to Australia, he had spent almost half his life on the road, working when he needed to and traveling when he could. He was a solid young “digger” with a woolly blond mop of hair and a gregarious nature. The lure of a new adventure led him to join the crew of a classic wooden yacht in a race from Sydney to Fiji.

Alan was a wiry young engineer from Canada with a taste for a challenge. He had been around the water since his childhood and taken formal training in sailing, navigation, and seamanship. Now he had exchanged his calculator for a sextant and signed on to an offshore training cruise from Vancouver to Hawaii. He had a broad smile, a bushy ginger beard and a reputation for his resourcefulness.

"Beer in the Bilges" is a true life account of three men’s sailing adventure in the South Pacific. The book is split up into four parts. The first part is the story of “Hollywood” Bob from New Zealand’s sailing adventure from California to New Zealand with his actor friends Hal Holbrook and Dixie Carter. The second part is the story of Peter from Australia’s sailing and racing adventure from Sydney to Suva yacht race to his voyage to the Polynesian Islands. The third part is the story of Alan from Canada’s first offshore voyage from Canada to Hawaii. Part four is where the three intrepid men combine forces for the yacht delivery of Ron of Argyll to Hawaii with their extensive time in Pago Pago Harbor, American Samoa.

Coauthors Alan Boreham, Peter Jinks, and Bob Rossiter smartly divide their individual adventures in the first three parts to introduce each author with their own sailing adventures accompanied by great pictures. The reader gets to become familiar with each storyteller about their exciting, fascinating trips across faraway lands that most people can only dream of. Coming from a sailor who has been traveling on a boat for the last five years, "Beer in the Bilges" accurately and amusingly depicts the lifestyle of cruisers/sailors with their stories of drinking copious amounts of beer, constant maintenance, hilarious characters that you meet along the way, and disasters at sea. The lingo is pure sailor and it was also clever of them to have a guide of sailor terminology and hilariously enough, British and Kiwi slang. This book is terrific for anyone that dreams of adventure, especially for anyone wanting to conquer the sea!
