Behold the Bird in Flight by Terri Lewis centers around Isabelle d’Angoulême, a twelfth-century French-born aristocrat who longs to forge her identity in a world dominated by powerful men. While growing up, Isabelle is groomed by her Maman to run a castle and be a dutiful wife. As her 12th birthday approaches, she is deemed of marrying age. Isabelle becomes enamored by Hugh, a young nobleman whose father has pledged to foster her and continue her lessons. While trying to arouse feelings of jealousy in Hugh, Isabelle catches the eager gaze of King John of England. The king eventually abducts and marries her, much to her disapproval. Amidst England's political instability and her turbulent marriage with King John, Isabelle longs for the embrace of Hugh, her true love. Will Isabelle and Hugh reunite? Will she acquire the power she truly desires?
Terri Lewis aptly explores the lives of well-known historical personalities using a fictional platform. Behold the Bird in Flight paints a compelling picture of Isabelle of Angoulême, a young woman torn between her own aspirations as a human being and the desires of the men that preoccupied her life. She existed in a historical era where young girls were valued solely for their childbearing and rearing capabilities. Lewis flawlessly portrays Isabelle's harrowing reality. The novel also beautifully fleshes out the cultural and historical dynamics surrounding women's roles (including a queen's role) in twelfth-century Europe. The author does an outstanding job of exploring Isabelle's resilient and resourceful nature when faced with the troubling situations culminating in her marriage to King John. As Isabelle develops her inner strength, readers will undoubtedly enjoy her remarkable journey into maturity and womanhood.
