Beyond (Beyond Series Book 1) by Maureen A. Miller is a young adult science fiction story that takes Aimee from her normal, everyday life and transplants her into a new world. The day after high school graduation, Aimee is kidnapped and dragged into an entirely new world. What world, she doesn't know, but she can see Earth from the window of the ship. Aimee learns that she was not actually kidnapped, but accidentally brought to this new world. A group of humans forced to flee their planet after an epidemic destroyed their civilization now travels the galaxies in search of an antidote. They collect plant life from different solar systems, and accidentally took Aimee back with them on one of these searches.
Unfortunately, Aimee can't return to Earth for five years, so she must make the best of her situation. She meets a lot of interesting new characters. Some, like Zak, are friendly and attractive. Others are creepy and dangerous. When a disease affects the Guardian ship Aimee is on, she and Zak work together to find a cure. Aimee enjoys working with the handsome Zak a little too much. When it comes time for her to return home, will she be able to leave Zak behind?
This was an intriguing science fiction story that had well written characters and an interesting story. Readers will especially like the love interest between Zak and Aimee and the dilemma that Aimee struggles with when it comes time to choose what she really wants most out of life. Nice job.
