Born and Bred: Volume 2 by Paul Osula is a thrilling tale of crime, family ties, and shifting allegiances. The protagonist, Ash, has a very symbolic name, as he ponders burning down the criminal syndicate he is associated with. However, he did not always go by the name Ash. Before the syndicate claimed his brother’s life, he went by Jason. The head of the crime family, Roman, is aware of his past but chooses to keep him around as an enforcer. It is evident that Ash yearns for revenge, but can Roman tame him? If conflict breaks out between the two, does Ash have the strength to overthrow a well-established crime lord? Ash must contemplate whether revenge is worth crossing the lines that his brother fought and died to keep him from crossing.
I greatly enjoyed reading Born and Bred by Paul Osula. I appreciate that this short, well-paced second book effectively highlights important information from the first one, helping me understand the character arcs. It is perfectly fine to start the story at volume 2, but Osula’s writing style makes me want to go back and read from the beginning. I think that the poetic writing style is to be credited for the well-developed cast of characters, despite minimal word usage. Although the plot is familiar, there is a level of suspense, mystery, and emotional connection with Ash that made me deeply invested in this tale. I am looking forward to reading volume 3. I highly recommend Born and Bred to all readers.
