Jane Bouddic is not your usual teenager. Sure, she is angsty, has a stubborn streak and doesn’t know when to back down, but she knows how to make things work. After having an alcoholic mother and an absent father, she knew that she was the only one who was going to be there for her. However, this was the summer she wanted nothing but peace and quiet. But even that plan changed when a strange man named Jack approached her and gave her a mission. She is given the job of finding a Russian terrorist and trying to save the world from him. She never thought this would be easy, but she had no idea it would be this difficult. What will she do now that she has taken the job? Has she finally bitten off more than she can chew?
Born Ready by Kathleen Belt is a young adult novel that follows a young girl who had hard luck, but she never backed down. I loved Jane; she was charismatic, headstrong, ready to take action and never backed down from a challenge. Was she a little careless at times? Yes, she was, but she learned from her mistakes and grew. Her thirst to prove herself, make herself better and get to the bottom of things drew me in. Her growth was tremendous; she gave herself time to improve and prove her mettle not to anyone else, but to herself. The narrative evolves with the plot, the tension builds with it, and the author ensures that the reader is hooked right from the beginning. I was interested and invested from chapter one and didn’t want to stop reading until the very end. Jane is now my favorite heroine. An action-packed adventure that I loved!
