Bourton Bridge by Mia Fox falls into the gentle, sweet, cozy romance category. Luke has spent the last few years piecing his life together after finally managing to escape the clutches of a controlling and abusive father and the loss of his first true love. He works as a chef at his mentor’s high-class French restaurant in Bourton Bridge, in the beautiful English Cotswolds. His boss Elizabeth is more than a mentor to him; she is like a surrogate mother figure. A brash American comes to Bourton Bridge and Luke discovers he is involved in a dubious property deal close to Elizabeth’s restaurant. The deal involves Luke’s father, so he is even more motivated to keep his distance. The American’s wife Jade catches Luke’s eye though and he quickly realizes Jade has a lot of pain inside. As the pair become closer, Luke knows he has to act on his instincts or lose her forever.
Bourton Bridge: Bourton Bridge Series Book 1 is the epitome of an old-fashioned tender romance. Author Mia Fox has chosen a beautiful and poetic setting for her two protagonists to meet and fall in love. Her writing evokes a gentle passion that lovers of this genre will enjoy and embrace. I appreciated the author’s use of a split timeline that allows readers to see and understand the backstory of Luke’s loss, pain, and angst from five years previously. I also enjoyed the peripheral characters, most of whom were quintessentially British, and displayed those characteristics we so often expect of them. Whether it was the spinster sisters who owned the antique shop, the daily visitor to the restaurant who was too shy to ask Elizabeth out, or Luke’s best mate Harry, who would always have his back, the characters all reflect many we have seen on British soap operas such as Emmerdale. This is a relaxing read that will certainly appeal to fans who love this style of romance.
