Bunster is a simple little bunny who enjoys doing simple things, like watering his yellow daffodil because the color matches the yellow of Bunster’s jacket. He has a squad of ducklings that he cares for and, placing them in a basket, he carries them to visit a little girl who’s playing with a chocolate bunny. A hedgehog family joins in the fun. The passion for friendship between humans and animals (and even chocolate bunnies) is genuine.

Christine Panzer’s board book, Bunster, An Easter Story, is intended for the very young, those who still sit on a parent or guardian’s knee and listen to a good story while enjoying the illustrations. The language is usually simple, which, for the most part, is true for this story, though there are some rather complex words, like inconspicuously, for this type of early reader. The bright, colorful illustrations are what will attract the young child the most. Even the silliness of the gathering in the girl’s room, the bunny, ducklings, chocolate bunny and hedgehog family, will garner a few giggles. It’s a celebratory story, one that celebrates spring and Easter, new life evident in the young ducklings, the young hedgehogs and the little girl. As a board book, it’ll be well chewed upon long before the child is old enough to try reading on their own. It’s a great way to encourage young people to the passion of reading books.
