Buried Bones by Bonnie Moore features ex-prosecutor and failed romantic, Maggie Anderson. Having felt responsible for the death of a key witness in a high-profile criminal case, Maggie gracefully retires to a quiet corner of Utah to enjoy her senior years. Her new group of fellow pensioners has visited the wood cabin on the secluded Stevenson’s Row together before, but this time sends Maggie into investigation mode, and almost costs her everything. Recent excavation work has unearthed a set of female bones, and Maggie hears the ghostly cries of a lonely woman taken before her time. The town blames the ex-husband for Audrey’s murder, but Maggie believes he’s an innocent scapegoat. The group uses their unique skills to find the real killer but unleashes a tidal wave of local hatred, hiding a deep-rooted, decades-old conspiracy. Maggie’s principles and her life are on the line.
I loved the extraordinary depth of the characters in Buried Bones. I found the premise of a group of retirees solving a crime both refreshing and engaging, and the novel will appeal to readers seeking something more realistic. The portrayal of small-town Medford has the hallmarks of an entrenched and insular community, and Bonnie Moore does a fantastic job of meshing it with a pertinent theme of justice. The residents’ view of justice is based on a sliding scale of convenience and suitability, rather than honesty or fairness. The juxtaposition of that to Maggie’s prosecutorial understanding creates dramatic tension throughout the novel. I enjoyed the gripping twists and turns of the plot, and appreciated Maggie’s constancy, both as a character and for her steadfastness. This novel is beautifully constructed and flawlessly edited, and I thoroughly enjoyed its invitation into the small-town mystery genre. My favorite line to sum up Maggie Anderson is this: “Before leaving her job, she had always moved like a big-city prosecutor on the warpath.” This is her greatest quality and the one that puts her in the most danger in this carefully crafted plot.
