Jo Beverley has given us another wonderful historical romance in Christmas Angel. Lord Leander Knollis is one of a company of rogues who wants to settle down in the family mansion. He is ready for a wife and children, with one stipulation: he does not want love to factor into the relationship. He is introduced to the widow Judith Rossiter who had an unsatisfactory marriage to a poet. At first, the characters appear a bit shallow, but then we really get into the heart of their true personalities and the plot takes off like an arrow leaving the bow. Judith's two children factor heavily into her decision to marry Lord Knollis and Judith's practicality is equally attractive to him. They begin to develop plans for a life together which involves living in the mansion estate Lord Knollis has rejected for years.
No one knows how to tell a historical romance story like Jo Beverly and she does it with ease and finesse in Christmas Angel. The plot keeps moving at a sometimes predictable pace and then the reader is swept up into the unexpected, which facilitates the growth of the characters and delights the reader. Judith presents as a strong woman at a time in which women were still considered possessions of the husband. Lord Knollis shows himself to be a compassionate and understanding man who welcomes input from all intelligent beings. The romance builds to a wonderful resolve and surely most readers will be cheering for the union and the "happily ever after" as well.
