In Colin the Crab Gets Married by Tuula Pere, Colin is engaged, and he and his betrothed, Clara, decide it is time to tell everyone about their intended nuptials. The news travels fast among his friends, and, before Colin knows it, everyone is congratulating him on taking the big step. Colin's friends also tell him they expect a reception after the wedding and offer advice and assistance to make it a grand event. Colin is a quiet carpenter crab who enjoys simplicity, so their expectations disappoint him, and he talks to Clara about his feelings. They agree to move forward with their plans for a more casual wedding, but their friends have other ideas as they seek to make it into an extravagant event without the couple's encouragement or knowledge.
Tuula Pere captures the humor and fun that infects friends and family just before a wedding. Colin and Clara's friends are so concerned about what they want to have - or had at their own weddings - that they forget it isn't their wedding to organize. Their hearts are in the right place, but the story shows the circumstances that may follow when we don't listen to people's wishes. The narrative raises good talking points for young readers, like truly listening and respecting other people. With an interesting story and colorful illustrations by Roksolana Panchyshyn, Pere's book is certain to entertain children and adults. Readers who enjoy amusing books with talking animals and valuable messages will like Colin the Crab Gets Married.
