If you have ever felt like you’re trying to lead a team while standing in the middle of a hurricane, Composure: How Centered Leaders Make the Biggest Impact is the book you need to pick up. Zoë Routh moves way past the typical "rah-rah" motivational fluff and gets into the actual grit of what it means to stay centered when everything is going sideways. Routh defines leadership as "grace under fire," and she doesn't just treat it as a catchy phrase; she sees it as a survival skill. In a world that feels like it’s in constant "disruption mode," this book is a much-needed anchor for anyone responsible for guiding others through the chaos.
Two parts of Composure really stuck with me and felt like they were written for the exact madness of modern leadership. First, the idea of "The Antidote to Volatility" was a major takeaway, as Zoë Routh breaks down how a leader’s internal state—their actual level of calm—dictates the temperature of the entire room. If you’re a mess, your team will be a mess. Second, I loved the focus on "Mindset over Productivity." We are so used to being told to just "do more," but Routh argues that if you aren't mentally centered, all that "doing" is just busywork. It’s about having the courage and wisdom to pause so you can actually lead with compassion instead of just reacting to the latest fire. If you want to be the kind of leader who keeps their nerve while everyone else is losing theirs, you have to read this book.
