Crabbit Chops! by J.M. McClatchie, with illustrations by Jade Lawley, tells the tale of Michelle, a crab who struggles to fit in and have some fun. No matter what she does, she stands out, much to her humiliation and the amusement of some seagulls observing her. She worries a lot and can’t seem to relax. The seagulls think she is strange and stuck up, so they do not try to be nice to her. They all learn a valuable lesson when Michelle finally decides to speak to them about how they make her feel with their mockery and unfriendliness.
Anyone who has ever been bullied or had to put up with mean boys and girls will be able to relate to this story. I love how realistic Michelle is, and I think many readers will fall in love with this character. Crabbit Chops! by J.M. McClatchie shows why communication and understanding are required to form a healthy society. I love how this book encourages readers to be open to honest conversations and ready to lend a listening ear when someone wants to resolve an issue. Through Michelle, it is evident that even people who seem different want to be loved and understood, and some people are just shy and going through a lot, so they might seem snobbish. I also enjoyed how well the illustrations captured the facial expressions of the characters, as this helped vivify them. I recommend this book to parents trying to teach children to be kind and inclusive to everyone.
