Dad's Diet: A Weight Loss Program for the Man of the House is a nonfiction health and fitness book written by Robert J. Morrow. The encroachment of middle age combined with the ongoing pandemic has dads, their wives, and doctors considering just how far they can get along with a dad bod, and when more extreme measures need to be taken, i.e. a diet. Most guys dread that word and with good reason. They think of carrot and celery sticks and a minuscule piece of steamed chicken or fish replacing their heartier nighttime fare. They dread facing a repertoire of foods alien to their chicken-wing and beer-loving natures. Morrow gets that. He’s been there and figured out how he could still indulge in the foods he enjoys while getting back the fit, lean body he really missed, even if he would never have admitted it before.

Morrow’s approach is often referred to as CICO, or calories in, calories out. He helps readers determine a caloric target for each day and demonstrates how to finetune it via exercise and just walking around a bit more. He introduces apps that can help the dieter track their calories and find out just how much that piece of pie will impact their calorie count for the day. While he extolls the benefits of cooking at home, he gets that sometimes fast-food stops are a necessity, and he shows how to handle those situations with suggestions on minimizing the damage. Likewise, he assures readers that, yes, they still can have Friday nights at the local tavern with the guys, complete with beers and wings, but the portions do need to be adjusted -- a bit. Best of all, he assures the reader their bodies and appetites will adjust to the smaller portions necessary for portion-controlled eating, and they actually will begin to enjoy the healthier food they eat along the way. I found his book to be well-written, offering cogent strategies for gaining control over one’s eating patterns, while inspiring and cheering on the reader at the same time. Diets are not easy, any of them. Morrow’s success with CICO and his shared techniques, tips and tricks make this book one which can help dieters achieve what is often an impossible task.
