“In this way, you only know what they permit you to know, you become what they want you to be, and you exist only if they allow it.” The more things change, the more they stay the same in Dark Neology: Dante's Gray Pages by Dan Neo S.S. The year is 2067, and a sick man named Dante is contemplating as he writes in his journal. The world is now split up into four zones, and countries are meaningless, as one pandemic after another allows those in power the excuse for genetic manipulation of the people. With his life devoid of meaning and hope, Dante signs up as a test subject, only to awaken hundreds of years later in a world where humans are almost extinct and have been replaced by Neo-sapiens, genetically crafted humans of immense physical powers but perhaps mentally devolved. As Dante tries to find his place in this new world, aided by newfound friends, he navigates a surreal reality and a world teetering on the edge of war.
Thoughtful, bold, and with a touch of mysticism, Dark Neology by Dan Neo S.S. is one of the more original and epic sci-fi tales I've encountered. The plot centers on a nobody living in an ever-increasing technological dystopia who volunteers himself as a guinea pig only to awaken centuries later in a world he doesn't recognize or fit in. While the book exhibits strong thematic depth, primarily focused on the age-old struggle between good and evil, it also condemns the excesses and decay of society, politics, and flawed economic systems. Top-notch character development and masterful world-building are the novel's strengths, resulting in a deeply immersive story. A generally brisk but at times uneven pace defines the narrative, making it feel more like I was previewing an upcoming mini-series. For fans of dystopian science fiction seeking something fresh, this novel delivers a unique and engaging read.
