DarkSoul is a work of fiction in the urban fantasy, action, and adventure sub-genres, and was penned by author L. Brooks. Written for adult reading audiences, the work does contain the use of explicit language throughout, as well as scenes of a sexual nature and the presence of graphic violence right from the opening scenes. This highly engaging novel gives nods to both the crime and superhero genres as we encounter protagonist Orion Stormgod, who finds himself raised back from the very brink of death, but with a new life-force alongside his own. Will this impetuous Darksoul help Orion face the evils of the world, or force him down a similar path?
Author L. Brooks has crafted a really engaging and action-packed work that will be sure to entertain fans who enjoy crime and mafia novels, superhero urban thrillers, and dark fantasy tales alike. One of the things which I really enjoyed about the novel was its character development, which begins with the classic nickname style introductions to such enigmatic and utterly awful villains as Graveyard, but later develops these figures into a much deeper and more compelling evil for our hero to face. As Orion too grows, the plot thickens into a tense standoff where the stakes are raised with every chapter and new dangers are nicely paced to add to the overall terror. The dialogue is gritty and realistic, keeping this supernatural journey grounded. Overall, I would certainly recommend DarkSoul to fans of well penned and action-packed urban fantasy everywhere.
