Déjà Vu and Fritters Too: Home from Afghanistan, a Marine Falls for a Girl He Cannot Pursue, by Janet Sharp, is a novel that begins late at night in Modesto, CA, near a shabby hotel in San Pablo Avenue. Jenny Corey, a young volunteer, is raped by three men. But David Moreno, a former Marine with tours of Iraq and Afghanistan, stops her attackers. Afterwards, he brings Jenny back to his apartment, a temporary shelter set up for him by the California Police Department. Moreno is on a mission to infiltrate a notorious gang headed by his childhood friend, Paul Rodriguez aka Paco. David falls in love with Jenny. But he can’t reveal the truth about his life. Readers will be surprised how this love story and criminal fiction turns out.
The cover is apt for this excellent book, filled with action and adventure. California is the perfect setting. Janet Sharp is a gifted writer who drew me into the story with her use of dialogue and her streetsmart characters. She was raised in Berkeley, California. Sharp has a bachelor’s degree from Fresno State and a master’s degree from the University of Iowa. Déjà Vu and Fritters Too is Sharp’s first fiction book. Janet and her husband Bill published Generations: A History of the Sharp and Bliss Families from 1776 to 2006. Déjà Vu and Fritters Too is highly recommended.
