In Demon Riding Shotgun by L.R. Braden, a necromancer led a group of rogue sorcerers to attack the Paranatural Task Force council in Washington. Nobody knew until they tried and failed. One week later, demon-possessed humans called rifters are about to take over the earth, and no one knows about it either. Fortunately, Mirana Fuentes, a balanced rifter, is in town, and she not only knows how to sniff out secrets, but she is also on humanity’s side. As Mira goes to eliminate the rest of the necromancer’s soldiers from the DC attack, she sees her target being threatened by another rifter over a plan. After eliminating the target, she follows the trail of the other rifter until it leads her into the trap of a sovereign demon and earns her fugitive status with the PTF. It turns out that there is indeed a plan — one that looks bad for humans. But with the misguided police hot on her trail and her enemy out of her league, can Mira save humankind?

In L. R. Braden’s Demon Riding Shotgun, paranormal meets natural, and things go “bang” in a series of reality-defying encounters interspersed in a straightforward plot. It is an urban fantasy that combines its fair share of sleuthing with elements of mystery and the supernatural. The author uses italics to convey Mira’s thoughts and angle brackets to show her demon’s response during their silent conversations. I liked those conversations because they added a dimension of liveliness and some laugh-out-loud humor to the story. The characterization was so good that the personality difference between Mira and her demon was as clear as day, although they shared the same body. L. R. Braden further impressed me with a consistent and uncomplicated portrayal of how demon possessions worked. Demon Riding Shotgun will earn rave reviews from any supernatural or paranormal fiction audience.
