Don't Step in the Trap: How to Recognize and Avoid Email Phishing Scams by Brett W. Smith is a basic computer usage manual aimed at the new or occasional user. The author brags that it is written in plain English, and, except where the concepts are really obscure, this is the truth. There is a great deal of current, useful information, especially the lists at the end.
This manual begins on a very basic level -- think about the "For Dummies" series. I think it will be impossible to get it into the hands of the novice computer users who would get the most out of it, so it should probably be marketed to family members who are concerned about mom and dad using the new computers they got as gifts. Nice people sometimes are not as wary of strangers, strange emails, or strange websites as they should be. As a 50+-year computer user, I still learned a few new pieces of useful information, and the glossary is wonderful.
Like any computer manual, Don't Step in the Trap: How to Recognize and Avoid Email Phishing Scams will probably be 25% out of date within a year. The shelf-life of a computer book is slender. I applaud the altruism of the author, Brett W. Smith, who is worried about his fellow computer users and has written a fine how-not-to training manual. I sincerely hope that this small book meets with great success quickly and helps someone to avoid a potentially very serious trap.
