Don't Touch the Glass is a psychological suspense novel written by G.N. Boorse. Audrey lives with his mom in Pineville Valley, West Virginia. The area has had a history of flooding during bad storms, and Audrey's mother is worried about having enough water in case the storm that's brewing causes problems. She asks Audrey to ride down to Walter's Supermarket in town to get a couple of gallons of water. When he gets there, the store is filled with other customers stocking up. Then, suddenly, the entrance doors are locked, and the customers and staff are stunned to see the mountainside above the street sheer off. A vast mudslide takes houses, trees and cars with it, and the store is surrounded by tons of mud and water. The inhabitants are trapped with no way out until the rescue crews get to them.
G.N. Boorse's psychological thriller, Don't Touch the Glass, is taut and suspenseful. It's also an accomplished coming of age story about Audrey, who's always wanted to know about the father who left before he was born, and who's had to leave school to help his mother with the household finances. When we first meet him, he's somewhat diffident and shy as he explains the genesis of his somewhat unusual name, and we see the store and its unwilling occupants through his eyes. When someone begins killing those who attempt to leave the building, the tension ramps up for him and everyone else as no one knows who can be trusted. Don't Touch the Glass is a unique survivor story, as access to food and water are not an issue, but the fear, uncertainty and strain of their continued close confinement still wreaks havoc on the individuals in that store. Boorse's storytelling is masterful, and his prose is elegant and as crisp as the mountain air of Pineville. Don't Touch the Glass is a story that's easy to get caught up in and a dream to read. It's most highly recommended.
